Weichai Engine Model Numbers Explained: WD vs WP Series

Weichai model numbers look cryptic at first, but they follow a clear logic. Understanding the naming system helps you order the right parts and avoid expensive mistakes.

What WD and WP Mean

  • WD series — the classic heavy-duty platform. Examples: WD615 (9.726 L) and WD618, used in HOWO, Steyr-based and other trucks for decades.
  • WP series — the modernized platform. Examples: WP10, WP12 and WP13, with common-rail injection and stricter emissions, covering roughly 266 to 550 hp.

Example Meaning
WD615.68C WD platform, 615 series, variant 68C
WP10.E3 WP platform, 10-litre class, Euro III emission stage
WP13 WP platform, 12.54-litre flagship for heavy trucks

Why the Part Number Matters More Than the Model

Within one model family there are many variants — different pistons, liners and gasket sets depending on emission stage and application. The safest way to order is the OEM part number stamped on your old component, plus your engine serial number. A good supplier checks both before shipping.
